President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Congressman Mike Waltz, co-chair of the India Caucus, as his National Security Adviser. Waltz, a retired Army colonel and former Green Beret, has represented Florida in the US House of Representatives since 2019. He is known for his strong criticism of President Joe Biden’s foreign policy, particularly the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal. Waltz has also advocated for stronger US support for Ukraine and for NATO members to increase defense spending.

Waltz’s role on key committees, including the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence Committees, has shaped his stance on national security. He is also a member of the Republican China taskforce, emphasizing the need for military preparedness in the Indo-Pacific region. While he praised Trump’s push for NATO allies to spend more on defense, he does not support withdrawing from the alliance.

Known for his willingness to serve in high government positions, Waltz had been considered for the role of Pentagon chief before being named National Security Adviser, a position that does not require Senate confirmation. His appointment highlights his influence on US foreign policy and defense matters, particularly regarding India and international security.

Trump’s swift announcement of key personnel includes Susan Wiles as White House Chief of Staff and Stephen Miller as senior adviser. The President-elect is quickly assembling his administration, with other appointments such as Tom Homan as “border czar” and Elise Stefanik as US ambassador to the UN.
