West Bengal court charges Sanjay Roy with rape and murder in RG Kar case
A West Bengal court has framed charges against Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On November 11, the trial will begin. The Sealdah court charged Roy with murder under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and rape under Section 64. Additionally, he faces charges under Section 66 for causing death or leaving the victim in a persistent vegetative state.
The junior doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, sparking nationwide outrage and protests. In response, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Supreme Court also took suo motu cognizance of the case and formed a National Task Force (NTF) to address safety and dignity issues concerning medical professionals.
Previously, the CBI received permission to conduct narcoanalysis tests on former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and other alleged suspects. However, Roy is identified as the sole accused in the chargesheet.
The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting concerns about the safety of doctors in India. The legal proceedings will unfold as many await justice for the victim and seek assurance that similar incidents will be prevented in the future.
