President Droupadi Murmu concluded the first phase of her state visit to three African nations—Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi—on Tuesday. After spending three days in Algeria, she arrived in Mauritania on Wednesday to begin the second phase. This visit is significant as Mauritania currently holds the presidency of the African Union.

In Mauritania, Murmu is set to hold talks with President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al Ghazouani. She will also meet the country’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Additionally, Murmu will engage with the Indian community in Mauritania. This visit aims to strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Mauritania.

From October 17 to 19, President Murmu will visit Malawi at the invitation of President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera. During her stay, she will hold bilateral meetings with Malawi’s leadership and interact with key business figures, industry leaders, and the Indian diaspora. She is also scheduled to visit sites of cultural and historical importance.

Before leaving Algeria, Murmu explored the ancient Roman city of Tipasa, a significant cultural and trading hub built in the 6th century BC. She also visited the Mauritanian Royal Tombs, which date back to the Numidian era, getting a closer look at Algeria’s rich historical heritage.

This multi-country tour underscores India’s efforts to deepen its ties with African nations at a time of growing geopolitical and economic importance.
