Heightened Security in Place for J&K’s Second Phase of Elections
This election is significant, as it is the first in 10 years since the abrogation of Article 370.
The second phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections started on September 25 and will end at 6pm the same day. Meanwhile, security forces have tightened measures in key constituencies like Rajouri, which has witnessed a rise in terror attacks recently. Over 2.5 million voters will choose among 239 candidates, including National Congress’ Omar Abdullah and BJP’s Ravinder Raina.
The first phase took place on September 18, with a voter turnout of 61.13%. This election is significant, as it is the first in 10 years since the abrogation of Article 370. Following this, the third phase will be held on October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 8.
In the political arena, the Congress and National Conference have allied, while the BJP and PDP are running separately. Both camps have exchanged sharp criticisms, with Rahul Gandhi accusing Prime Minister Modi of losing confidence. The BJP called these remarks “baseless” and “laughable.”
In addition, the election commission has set up special polling stations, including those run by women, youth, and specially-abled individuals, as well as in border areas.
