New Delhi, June 20 (HS): President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday said the newly-elected Modi government was committed towards the eradication of illegal religious practices such as Triple Talaq and Nikah Halala which was imperative for ensuring equality of all women across the country.

President Kovind stressed on women empowerment  being the topmost priority of the Modi government while addressing joint sittings of both the houses of Parliament at the Central Hall, New Delhi.
The bill  banning the practice of Triple Talaq was instrumental in ensuring a large majority of Muslim women supporting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA-I)  in re-electing Narendra Modi government as Prime Minister for a second term.
The President urged the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to support all the efforts undertaken by the Modi government and cooperate in banning such illegal practices such as instant Triple Talaq including Nikah Halala to make the lives of women ”better and dignified”.
He lauded the efforts of the ruling Modi government towards creating ‘New India’ with 78 women MPs  been elected to the Lok Sabha, the highest in history since Independence. The President said the effective involvement of women in society and economy was the cornerstone of a developed society.
He lauded the several intiatives taken by the Modi government towards the empowerment of women such as ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, ‘Ujjwala Yojana’, ‘Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana’, ‘Deen Dyal Upadhyay Rashtriya Aajivika Mission’ etc.
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court had ruled the instant Triple Talaq as unconstitutional and void following which the previous Modi government had passed a bill declaring the religious practice as a criminal offence. However, the opposition had opposed the bill from being passed in the Parliament. The Modi government then passed an ordinance implementing the apex court’s order.
