Lucknow,  13 April  (HS) :    In a move to modernise education system in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the UP Government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has converted 15,000 primary and upper primary schools into English medium.

The move is a part of the many steps taken by the Yogi Government to transform the education system in UP in the last four years and aims at honing English speaking skills of children studying in government schools right since the beginning so that they can compete with missionary and convent school students.

According to a spokesperson of the state government about 1.83 crore children are studying in more than 1.5 lakh primary and upper primary schools in UP. The UP Government provides many of the students’ needs for free, including books, uniforms, bags, shoes and socks as well as sweaters in winter, he said.

The spokesperson says that the Government of the day has also renovated 1.39 lakh schools under ‘Operation Kayakalp’ to offer better academic facilities to the students. Apart from this, 15, 000 schools, including 10,000 primary and 5,000 upper primary, have been made English medium. About 60 primary and upper primary schools have been converted into English medium schools in Lucknow alone.

On the instructions of the State Government, two to three schools in every block of the state have been developed on the lines of English medium schools. The objective of the government behind the move is to enable the students of these schools converse in English as fluently as children of missionary schools do.

The move has already started yielding positive results with many of the children of the newly converted English medium schools having learnt to speak English with great ease and fluency under the guidance of their teachers.

The Director of Basic Education Sarvendra Vikram Singh said that the hard work and dedication of teachers to equip students of these primary and upper primary schools with English speaking skills has already started paying dividends as they are competing with children of private schools today.

According to Vandana Srivastava, teacher in-charge of Primary School, Hirapur, Barabanki, her school features among the top  schools of the block. The school has also been awarded by the government for its achievements, she added.  The school boasts of smart class, beautiful classrooms, library etc. “Most importantly, the school children now speak English.
