Jammu, January 8: Gujjars and Bakarwals are the third largest ethnic group in J&K constitutes more than 11.9% of the total population of the state. Schedule tribes are the only community in the state which maintains its culture and heritage throughout the ages. Various studies and reports indicating that socio-economic and educational status of Gujjar & Bakarwals in J&K is not satisfactory.

The Gujjars are traditionally called as Goajar, Gujar and Gurjara. The beginning of this tribe is very fascinating it was said that amid the time of attack of hunasthe gurjara tribes moved into northern India and Himachal Pradesh. In India, Gujjar populations are found generally in Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
The semi-nomadic Gujjar are found in the state of J&K. They have their own dialect GOJRI which is a branch of indo-aryandialect and have their own particular customs, workmanship and specialty. The term Bakarwalis derived from the combination of two terms “Bakri” means goat / sheep and “wal” meaning “one who take care” of essentially the name “Bakarwal” implies high altitude goats and sheep herders. Bakarwals are primarily pastoral nomads rearing goats and sheep in high altitude of Great Himalayan during summers and spent their winters in plains and foothills of shwaliks.
They are special nomadic tribes mainly found in PPR of mountains located between J&K and Himachal Pradesh. In J&K region, Bakarwals are stretched out in all the three regions of the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The Gujjar and Bakarwals who have been a roaming tribe in J&K, their economy is generally focused around cultivation. They herd animals like sheep, goat and buffaloes. A Cattle rearing is the source of livelihood for the Gujjar and Bakarwals. They may be said to be living in pastoral economy.
The pastoralist usually does not lead a settle life and became wanderers and nomads only under the pressure of changing weather. The government has taken few programs and steps for the upliftment of Gujjar and Bakarwals community in the state. These programmes are as follows: – (a) Integrated Rural Development Program. (b) Economic Rehabilitation of Rural poor. (c) Program for small and marginal farmers. (d) Self-help scheme. For the upliftment of Gujjar and Bakarwals community.
The government came out with many employment schemes in union territory of Jammu and Ladakh which are as follows: – (a) Javahar Rojgar Yojana (b) Indira AwasYojna (c) Self Employment for Educated Unemployed Youth. (d) Programs of Execution of Lift Irrigation It is attended by saying that socioeconomic and educational status of Gujjar and Bakarwals in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh is not satisfactory. No doubt a few families have good achievement in life but majority of the community still suffers due to their illiteracy and poverty. This also includes nomadism, poor infrastructure as well as poorly motivated teachers.
So there is a lack of awareness among the tribal community. – (a) Javahar Rojgar Yojana (b) Indira AwasYojna (c) Self Employment for Educated Unemployed Youth.
