Israel hits Lebanon after Hezbollah attacks military post
Israel launched airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday evening after Hezbollah targeted an Israeli military post. This exchange occurred despite a ceasefire agreement signed last week, highlighting its fragility.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported hitting Hezbollah infrastructure throughout Lebanon, claiming the strikes were a response to a “severe violation” of the truce. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Hezbollah’s actions and vowed a forceful response.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah stated it fired mortars at an Israeli position in the disputed Mount Dov area as a “defensive warning” against Israeli violations. Israel confirmed no injuries from the Hezbollah attack but maintained the group had broken the ceasefire.
Tragically, Lebanese health authorities reported nine deaths from Israeli strikes on two southern villages, escalating tensions further.
The ceasefire deal, brokered with US and French support, aimed to end over a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. It required Hezbollah to withdraw armed forces from southern Lebanon within 60 days while Israel agreed to pull back its troops from the area.
Monday’s violence underscores the challenges of enforcing the agreement. Both sides continue to trade accusations of non-compliance, threatening the truce’s future.
The situation remains tense as regional leaders and international mediators urge restraint to prevent further escalation.
