Siddaramaiah flags ‘constant confusion’ over Karnataka CM issue, seeks clarity from Rahul Gandhi
Political buzz has returned to Karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has now sought clarity from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. He flagged what he called “constant confusion” over leadership matters in the state government. Sources say he wants an unambiguous message from the party’s top leadership.
First, Siddaramaiah raised concerns over persistent rumours. He told party leaders that speculation about a power tussle refuses to die. He also conveyed his desire to expand the Cabinet. According to sources, he plans to meet Rahul Gandhi to address both issues directly. He wants the leadership to settle the matter once and for all.
Meanwhile, speculation over leadership tensions continues to swirl. The Congress high command has repeatedly denied any internal crisis. Party leaders insist that the Karnataka government remains stable. However, political chatter within the state refuses to fade.
Last month, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge stepped in to calm nerves. He said the high command has created no confusion. He stressed that state leaders should resolve issues internally. He also warned leaders against claiming personal credit for the party’s electoral win. Kharge reminded them that Congress rose in Karnataka through collective effort over decades.
At the same time, Siddaramaiah has maintained a firm stand. He has repeatedly said that he enjoys the confidence of the party leadership. He has also rejected claims of any rotational chief minister formula. He has asserted that he will complete the full five-year term.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has echoed that line. He has dismissed reports of rifts as speculation. He has blamed the opposition and sections of the media for fuelling rumours. He has said that he and Siddaramaiah work like brothers. He has also said that he will abide by the party’s decision whenever the leadership takes a call.
However, the leadership chatter has a clear backstory. The debate centres on an alleged internal understanding within the Congress. According to the rumour, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar would share the chief minister’s post for 2.5 years each. Siddaramaiah took oath on May 20, 2023. That timeline placed the halfway mark around November last year.
When no leadership change followed, the speculation intensified. Some MLAs seen as close to Shivakumar raised their pitch. A few of them travelled to Delhi and sought meetings with senior leaders. That move added fresh fuel to the leadership debate.
The Congress leadership responded firmly. Party leaders denied any power-sharing agreement. They reiterated that Siddaramaiah would complete the full term. Shivakumar also backed that position in public. He said factionalism does not run in his blood. He underlined that all MLAs belong to the Congress, not to rival camps.
Shivakumar also explained the Delhi visits. He said MLAs often meet the leadership before a Cabinet reshuffle. He described such interactions as routine political activity. He denied any rebellion or pressure politics behind the visits.
Despite these assertions, the issue continues to shadow the government. Siddaramaiah’s request for clarity reflects that reality. By seeking a direct conversation with Rahul Gandhi, he aims to shut down speculation. He also hopes to move ahead with governance and Cabinet expansion without political noise.
Meanwhile, the BJP has seized the opportunity. The opposition has accused the Congress leadership of daily infighting. BJP leaders claim that Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar focus more on power equations than governance. They argue that the confusion hurts administration and decision-making.
For now, the Congress leadership insists that the matter stands settled. Yet, Siddaramaiah’s outreach suggests that clarity from the very top remains crucial. As long as rumours persist, the leadership question will continue to shape Karnataka’s political narrative.
