RCB eyed Kohli for IPL 2025 captaincy, but he declined

Speculation about Virat Kohli’s return as Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain for IPL 2025 grew after the franchise failed to replace Faf du Plessis. Jitesh Sharma, newly signed by RCB, fueled rumors in December. However, the team ultimately backed Rajat Patidar. Jitesh later revealed why Kohli declined the offer.
“I learned about Rajat Patidar’s captaincy when everyone else did. Virat bhai didn’t want to lead the side,” Jitesh said. He later speculated that Kohli, away from captaincy since IPL 2021, might not have felt ready. “I don’t know why he declined. I’m not in management, but since he hasn’t captained in years, it seemed unlikely this year too. Rajat was the best option.”
RCB’s head coach Andy Flower also addressed Kohli’s decision. After RCB confirmed Patidar’s captaincy, team director Mo Bobat stated that they had considered Kohli. Speaking at an event in Bengaluru, Flower praised Kohli’s “maturity and integrity” in handling the discussions.
“Virat showed the integrity and maturity I expected. I enjoyed our conversation. His passion and energy for IPL remain strong. He respects Rajat as both a player and a person, and that relationship will be crucial,” Flower said. He highlighted Kohli’s impact last season, noting his role in turning RCB’s fortunes around. “That experience only deepened my respect for him.”
Kohli remains a key player for RCB, bringing leadership even without the captain’s armband. With Patidar stepping up, RCB enters IPL 2025 with a fresh approach.
