To test the theory, researchers analyzed a clinical trial with 244 overweight adults. They divided participants into two groups. One group followed a vegan diet, while the other continued their usual eating habits for 16 weeks.

The vegan group had no calorie restrictions and still ate processed foods. Their only rule was to eliminate animal products. The results were striking.

The vegan group lost an average of 13 pounds (5.9 kg) more than the control group. Many still consumed processed plant foods like frozen vegan pizzas and plant-based burgers. The NOVA food classification system ranked foods based on processing levels. The key finding? Weight loss depended more on food type than processing level.
