Violence in and outside UP:some key questions
Lucknow,December 19(HS) After Delhi and some other parts,Uttar Pradesh on Thursday witnessed a large-scale violence.Government buses were torched, other vehicles set on fire and stones were pelted on police personnel deployed to ensure that no harm was done to them. The state capital and Sambhal suffered the most in orgy of violence. In the state capital a police station was set on fire and some police vehicles damaged. Many policemen were injured.
It has become a norm after passage of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which has become an Act after signature by the President. Before the day, arson cases were reported from Mau and some other parts following actions against some Jamia Millia Islamia university students.
While a deep study reveals a pattern, some key issues have remained unanswered so far.It has been found that serious violence has erupted not in all but some parts of the cities or towns. For instance,it has taken place in old Lucknow.
The same is true about Sambhal .It has the largest menthol market in the South Asia.It is also known for handicrafts made from buffalo horns. At least four buses were set on fire in this district town.
The Samajwadi Party which has been mauled by the BJP was observing the day as protest day throughout the state.Processions were taken out in different parts. In some place protesters turned violent. It is yet to be known if this party workers were involved in violence.
This is understandable.A few other things are not. First, when restrictions under section 144 were imposed throughout the state soon after reports of arson in some parts of the country, how were processions taken out in Lucknow and other parts?
Second, every body who is some body in the opposition has said that the Act is a violation of the preamble and Article 14 of the Constitution.
No sitting judge has said it so far.The Supreme Court which was approached earlier has not stayed implementation. It has issued a notice to the Centre to give its points of view which is a routine matter. How does Akhilesh Yadav be sure that it is unconstitutional when he has got not a law but technical degree?
Third, home Minister Amit Shah has declared many a time that it has nothing to do with Muslims living in the country. It only covers the refugees who have come to the country following persecution in the neighbouring countries. Then why are Muslims agitated?
Fourth, the Act is not for or against a religion. Not is it for a caste. It deals with a class or category– a class which has suffered in these countries and wants to live peacefully and with dignity in this country.
Fifth, even some judges have found the NRC necessary. So,what is wrong if at all the CAA is a trailer?
At the end, it appears that those who are fanning the fire are either ignorant or they have political motive behind. Some TV channels are not less responsible. In the north-east only Tripura and Assam were mainly affected but some of them carried headlines like, North-east on the boil or North-east is burning. There are more than 200 universities in the country and violence was reported from only 15 or 20,but they made it look like a massive affair.
