Violence erupted in Rajasthan’s Tonk district on Wednesday after Independent candidate Naresh Meena allegedly slapped sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary at a polling station in Samravata village, Deoli-Uniara constituency. The altercation sparked widespread chaos, including stone pelting, arson, and clashes between Meena’s supporters and police.

Ajmer Range Inspector-General of Police, Om Prakash, confirmed that 60 individuals were arrested following the violence. Police attempted to apprehend Meena, but the situation worsened as vehicles were set on fire, including several police cars. A total of eight four-wheelers and over two dozen two-wheelers were damaged during the riot.

Meena, however, denied any wrongdoing, blaming the district collector and SP for the unrest. He claimed that the arrested individuals were innocent, asserting that he alone should bear responsibility for the incident. Meena also posted a defiant message on social media, reassuring his supporters that he wasn’t afraid and would reveal his next steps soon.

As the violence escalated, additional police forces were deployed to restore order. Tonk SP Vikas Sangwan explained that the unrest began when Meena entered the polling station amid a boycott by some villagers. Despite the assault on the SDM, voting resumed peacefully after Meena was removed from the scene.

Local authorities are still assessing the damage and have made several arrests. They also vowed to take legal action against Meena for the assault on the SDM. The situation remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring the area to prevent further violence.
