Uttarakhand: BRO starts reconstruction work of six km long Bailey bridge
Dehradun, June 27 (HS) Hundreds of people from the Border Roads Organization (BRO) on Saturday started reconstruction work of the strategically important six km long Bailey Bridge, near the Indo-China border in Munsiyari area in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district. The bridge collapsed on a rivulet, on June 22, when the truck tried to cross it despite several warnings. The bridge was also used by ITBP and army personnel. Later Uttarakhand police booked the driver for negligence and damaging the bridge.
The Border Roads Organization (BRO), which is a part of the Ministry of Defense, is the only force engaged in the construction and re-construction of all the border roads. The BRO functions under the necessary guidelines from the Director General (DG) office at Rishikesh. The organization is entrusted with the responsibility of supervising the repair and reconstruction of all border roads within a stipulated time.
BRO’s senior commanding officer PK Rai said that BRO personnel achieved 60% completion within five days of starting reconstruction of the bridge. “We have successfully completed over 60% of the reconstruction works on a war footing and the remaining 40% is yet to be completed,” said Rai. Talking to Hindustan Samachar, India’s largest multilingual news agency, senior officials of DG BRO said that the Munsiyari-Milam road heading towards the international border with China and Nepal would be connecting 15 border villages. According to him, all the repairs and reconstruction related works would be completed by March, 2021.
Meanwhile, the deployment of Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), an armed police force meant to protect borders, has been increased along Indo-china-Nepal tri-junction in view of repeated threats from across the border. SSB is a part of Ministry of Home Affairs. Along with SSB, ITBP contingents have also been deployed in strength along the border ranging from Nabhidang to Lipulekh in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district.
