The US embassy approved an emergency visa for Neelam Shinde’s family on Friday. Her father, Tanhaji Shinde, confirmed they will leave for the US on Saturday. Neelam, a postgraduate student at California State University, remains in a coma after a serious road accident in California on February 14.

Father’s Statement

Tanhaji Shinde recalled how he learned about the accident. “Neelam’s roommate called on February 16 but didn’t mention the accident. Later, she informed her uncle. Neelam is still in a coma, but her condition has slightly improved,” he told PTI.

Shinde thanked the Indian government, Maharashtra authorities, and the media for their support. “We can’t do much now. I just wish she gets well soon,” he said. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) intervened to speed up the family’s visa approval.

What Happened to Neelam Shinde?

Neelam, a Satara native, suffered severe head, hand, and chest injuries when a car hit her from behind. She underwent emergency brain surgery and has remained in a coma.

Accused Arrested

The Sacramento Police Department arrested 58-year-old Lawrence Gallows, who fled after hitting Shinde on Fair Oaks Boulevard. Police worked nonstop to identify and locate him. The accident occurred just before 7 pm, and officers found Neelam lying on the ground with critical injuries.

Government and Political Support

Neelam’s family sought an urgent visa, prompting the MEA to intervene. NCP leader Supriya Sule highlighted the case on social media, urging authorities to help. “Her father urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency,” she posted on X.

With the visa granted, Shinde’s family will soon be by her side, hoping for her recovery.
