Lucknow,June 05(HS)The partial unlocking and  resumption of rail services have led to a big jump in number of Corona cases mainly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar which account for over 70 per cent of migrant labourers. There may be further increase in numbers because of 15-day deadline fixed by the apex court to ferry all of them home.A large number of them are still out.

New areas have been hit by the disease due to their arrival. For instance,Basti in Uttar Pradesh which was free from the disease had 183 positive cases as on June 2.  Amethi ,a Congress stronghold where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi  was defeated in last general election for the Lok Sabha, too, had zero case, recorded 142 cases the same day.

The same was the case with Bihar. On the first day of April last there were only 24 positive cases in that state.Five of them were villagers who had returned from gulf counties.By June 5 (latest) the number soared to 4493.There was no death reported in April. The death tally went  up to 29 by noon on Friday.

According to  report available here,Majdoor Specials have so far brought around 20 lakh Bihar migrants home.Thousands of others have come home by road.

The number of returnees was much higher in Uttar Pradesh .It  might have crossed  30-lakh mark.Seventy per cent of cases were linked to migrant labourers .Positive cases as on June 5 were 9237.The death tally had reached 245.

There was  30 per cent hike in Corona cases in Rajasthan. Odisha faced  another issue:eighty per cent cases were reported from the rural areas.

More than 8000 cases were recorded per day from June 1 after partial lifting of lockdown and resumption of train services

The Supreme Court’s Friday order has, however, one positive :there may be a dramatic fall in number of  cases in July because of isolation and treatment  of other migrants.Recovery rate is higher in this country than other countries and many of them may go home cured and may not infect others.
