Donald Trump criticized Elon Musk’s plan to set up a Tesla factory in India, calling it “very unfair” to the US. He made the remark during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, where Musk also participated.

Trump argued that India’s high tariffs put American businesses at a disadvantage. He claimed that selling cars in India was “impossible” due to heavy import duties. Musk agreed, stating that India imposes a 100% tariff on auto imports. However, India currently charges a 15% duty on electric vehicles priced above $35,000 under certain conditions.

The former president expressed frustration over Musk’s decision, saying the US should not allow such deals without fair trade policies. He mentioned discussing the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, insisting that trade should be “fair and square.”

Despite the concerns, Tesla has already identified showroom locations in New Delhi and Mumbai. The company has also started hiring mid-level executives in India. Reports suggest that India has eased some restrictions, lowering the basic customs duty on high-end cars above $40,000 from 110% to 70%.

Trump insisted that the US would benefit from upcoming policy changes, predicting an influx of businesses and revenue. Musk agreed that trade policies needed to be balanced.

The debate over India’s tariffs has been a long-standing issue in US-India trade relations. While Trump views Musk’s move as a loss for America, Tesla sees it as an opportunity to enter a growing market.
