Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US Vice President JD Vance stressed the urgent need for a peace deal with Russia as the war drags on. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Vance reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to a lasting peace. He warned against a temporary truce that could reignite conflict in Eastern Europe.
Vance assured continued talks on ending the war, even as US President Donald Trump announced direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky, seeking firm US backing, called his meeting with Vance “the first, not the last.” He emphasized Ukraine’s urgent need for American support, saying, “We have a low chance to survive without the United States.” He also revealed that Trump had given him his personal contact, suggesting open lines of communication.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated as Russia launched 133 drones overnight, targeting Ukraine’s northern regions. Zelensky condemned the attack, accusing Putin of deception instead of preparing for negotiations. Russia dismissed the allegations, claiming Kyiv staged the attack to pressure Western allies for more aid.
The war’s future remains uncertain as Trump signals a shift in US policy. He and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hinted at excluding Ukraine from NATO. However, Vance told the Wall Street Journal that Trump might use military leverage against Russia to push for a deal.
The Munich Security Conference, running until February 16, gathers world leaders to discuss global security. With Trump’s return, upcoming European elections, and shifting alliances, the future of US-Ukraine relations remains a key issue on the agenda.
