The Trump administration has taken a bold step by engaging in direct talks with Hamas to secure the release of American hostages. This marks a significant shift from the longstanding US policy of avoiding communication with the group, which Washington designates as a terrorist organization. The White House confirmed the discussions, with US special envoy Adam Boehler leading negotiations in Doha, Qatar.

President Donald Trump reinforced his stance with a blunt ultimatum on social media. He demanded Hamas release all hostages and return the bodies of the deceased. “Release all of the hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you,” he warned. He also hinted at consequences, stating, “‘Shalom Hamas’ means Hello and Goodbye.”

The talks come amid growing urgency. Israeli intelligence reports that Hamas still holds 59 hostages, including five Americans. However, only 22 are believed to be alive. Among them is 21-year-old Edan Alexander from New Jersey. While Hamas acknowledged talks with US officials, it has resisted demands for immediate releases. A Hamas official told AFP that discussions focused on hostages with American citizenship, both living and deceased.

Negotiations between Hamas and Israel remain at an impasse. Under an earlier ceasefire deal, Hamas released hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. However, as the truce nears expiration, Hamas has rejected new proposals. The US attempted to extend the ceasefire for 50 days in exchange for half of the remaining hostages, but Hamas refused.

Trump’s ultimatum signals escalating pressure. He warned Hamas leaders to flee Gaza while they still could. “This is your last warning! Now is the time to leave Gaza while you still have a chance,” he wrote. “Make a SMART decision. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW, OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY LATER!” He also addressed Gaza’s civilians, stating, “A beautiful future awaits, but not if you hold hostages. If you do, you are DEAD!”

The President reaffirmed his unwavering support for Israel, recently approving billions in arms sales. “I am sending Israel everything it needs to finish the job,” he declared. “Not a single Hamas member will be safe if you don’t do as I say.”

Despite Trump’s hardline approach, special envoy Steve Witkoff continues diplomatic efforts. He played a key role in the initial ceasefire, which saw Hamas release dozens of hostages in exchange for 1,500 Palestinian prisoners. The White House had hoped this would lay the groundwork for further negotiations.

However, with Hamas refusing additional releases, efforts to extend the ceasefire have stalled. Witkoff had planned a trip to Doha for more discussions, but he canceled it after receiving word that Hamas had not shifted its position.

As tensions rise, Trump’s warning leaves little room for compromise. His administration’s unprecedented direct talks with Hamas mark a drastic policy shift, but whether they will secure the release of American hostages remains uncertain.
