Trump slams India’s ‘very high tariffs’ amid Canada Trade war

US President Donald Trump once again criticized India’s high tariffs, vowing to impose reciprocal tariffs on April 2. Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, he called India a “very high tariff nation” and reaffirmed his plan to match tariffs imposed on American goods.
Trade Talks and India’s Response
Indian officials hope to negotiate a resolution and avoid the tariffs. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in Washington, meeting US counterpart Howard Lutnick to discuss a potential trade deal by fall.
Trump’s latest remarks mark the second time in two days he has targeted India’s tariffs. During his address to Congress on Tuesday, he called them “very unfair” and criticized other nations for similar trade practices.
Trump’s Stance on Reciprocal Tariffs
Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting American manufacturing. Speaking from the US Capitol, he announced that countries imposing tariffs on US products would face equivalent charges.
“If you don’t make your product in America, you will pay a tariff—sometimes a large one,” Trump said. “Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades. Now it’s our turn.”
Canada Also in Trump’s Crosshairs
Trump also accused Canada of imposing excessive tariffs on American milk products and lumber. “Canada charges us 250% on milk and high tariffs on lumber,” he said. “We don’t even need their lumber. We have more than they do.”
With the April 2 deadline approaching, trade tensions continue to rise. The US and India must now decide whether to negotiate a deal or escalate their trade dispute.
