Trump names Pam Bondi as Attorney General after Gaetz steps back

Donald Trump named Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General on Thursday after Matt Gaetz withdrew amid misconduct allegations. Gaetz’s exit, following claims of sexual misconduct, marked a rare setback for Trump as he prepares for his second term. Bondi, a staunch Trump ally and former Florida attorney general, defended him during his first impeachment trial and worked to challenge vote counts in Pennsylvania in 2020.

Trump praised Bondi’s toughness, declaring she would end the DOJ’s alleged political bias. He wrote on Truth Social, “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again.”

Gaetz’s withdrawal came after Senate Republicans signaled he lacked support for confirmation. Accusations against Gaetz included illegal activity, drug use, and sexual misconduct, which he denies. In a statement, Gaetz said his nomination became a “distraction” to Trump’s transition efforts. Trump responded warmly, calling Gaetz’s future “bright.”

Trump’s other cabinet picks include vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as health secretary and Elon Musk to lead cost-cutting reforms. Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth faces scrutiny after allegations of sexual assault surfaced from a 2017 incident, though no charges were filed. These choices underscore Trump’s loyalty to his base and focus on disruptive governance.

The announcements come as Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance prepare for inauguration, signaling a divisive yet transformative term ahead.
