President Donald Trump has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States next week, according to a White House official. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not provide additional details. The invitation follows a phone conversation between Trump and Modi on January 27. During the call, Trump emphasized the importance of India purchasing more American-made security equipment and discussed immigration issues.

Modi responded warmly, congratulating Trump on his second term as president. He expressed India’s commitment to a mutually beneficial relationship, aiming for global peace, prosperity, and security. Modi also mentioned the shared partnership between India and the US.

Modi is expected to visit Washington, D.C., on February 12, following his trip to France. Sources indicate that Modi will meet with Trump on February 13, and Trump is likely to host a dinner for the Indian leader. Modi will stay in the US capital until February 14. He is also set to engage with American business leaders and the Indian diaspora during his visit.

The two nations are eager to strengthen trade ties and improve visa regulations. The US is India’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade surpassing $118 billion in 2023-24. Trump, who has called Modi a friend, mentioned in January that the Indian PM was planning to visit the US in February.

One key issue during the discussions will be the US trade deficit with India. Trump has pushed for reducing the trade gap, and India has signaled willingness to cooperate by reducing customs duties on select items, which may benefit US companies.

Another significant topic is immigration. Trump highlighted the issue in his call with Modi, urging India to “do the right thing” on the return of Indian nationals who entered the US illegally. India has agreed to repatriate citizens who were confirmed to have unlawfully entered the country.

On the strategic front, both countries are expected to reaffirm their commitment to technology cooperation. They may either continue or reframe initiatives focused on critical and emerging technologies. Additionally, the US is interested in enhancing military interoperability between the two nations. Trump has indicated openness to reviewing export control regulations related to India’s defense acquisitions.

India is also keen to avoid the tariffs that Trump has previously threatened due to India’s high tariffs on US goods. The discussions are poised to address these issues and further solidify the partnership between the two countries.
