Trump has a plan, India and China working to restore pre-2020 ties: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for his humility, resilience, and clear vision. In a conversation with podcaster Lex Fridman, Modi highlighted Trump’s well-defined strategy and commitment to “America First,” while asserting his own stance on “India First.”
Modi recalled the 2019 Howdy Modi event in Houston, where Trump sat in the audience as he spoke. He admired Trump’s decision to walk with him around the stadium, calling it a moment of mutual trust. Modi also cited Trump’s determination after surviving an assassination attempt in 2024, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to America.
Discussing U.S.-India ties, Modi shared his first meeting with Trump at the White House. Trump personally guided him through the building, recalling historical moments without notes. Modi found this impressive, noting Trump’s deep respect for America’s history. Even after Biden’s presidency, Trump continued to express his regard for Modi through mutual contacts.
On India’s foreign policy, Modi addressed ongoing border tensions with China. He confirmed that India and China are actively working to restore pre-2020 conditions, aiming to prevent disputes. He acknowledged historical tensions but stressed that both nations must engage in dialogue to ensure stability. He recalled India and China’s long history of cooperation and cultural exchange, asserting that competition should remain constructive.
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Modi stated that peace would only come through negotiations. He urged Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to recognize that battlefield victories alone would not resolve the conflict. He also criticized Pakistan’s role in fostering terrorism, stating that the world now sees it as a terror hub.
Modi described Trump’s current presidential campaign as stronger than before. He observed that Trump has built a capable team, including figures like Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk. Their recent meetings, he said, felt familial, reflecting a shared vision for progress.
On India-China relations, Modi reiterated that both nations are crucial for global stability. He emphasized that while differences exist, dialogue remains the key to maintaining peace. He noted that India and China historically contributed significantly to the world economy and should continue fostering cooperation.
