There is no proposal to reduce the retirement age: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, Nov 27 (HS): Good news for central employees. The government said on Wednesday that there is no proposal to reduce the retirement age of employees from 60 years to 58 years. Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, “At present, there is no proposal to reduce the retirement age from 60 years to 58 years.”

He said, ‘Under Fundamental Rules 56 (j), Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972, Rule 48 and Rule 16 (3) (amended) All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. There are provisions, according to which, the government retires the officers before time. The government is empowered to give notice to the employee based on a lack of integrity or ineffectiveness, in the public interest. In such a case, the government will not give less than three months’ notice or pay three months’ salary and allowances.

Minister said, ‘Such provisions can apply to a government employee if he is in Group’ A ‘or Group’ B ‘service or any holds a position in a permanent, semi-permanent or temporary capacity and has served before the age of 35 and is over 50 years old. ‘ He said that in any other case, after the age of 55, these rules will be applicable to the employees.

Before the written reply of Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh in Parliament, it was said that the government can change the retirement age from April 1, 2020. At present, the age of retirement of central employees is 60 years while the age of doctor and university professor is 65 years. It was said in the reports that this arrangement will open the way for the promotion and new recruitment of central employees.
