Telangana student shot dead in US, probe underway

Indian student G. Praveen, 26, died in the US under mysterious circumstances, his family said on Wednesday. He suffered bullet wounds, but authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death.

Praveen, a Telangana native, was pursuing his MS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On Wednesday morning, US officials informed his family that they had found his body. His friends reported bullet injuries, his cousin Arun said.

Before this news, Praveen had called his father early Wednesday morning. However, his father, still asleep, missed the call. Hours later, the family received the devastating update. US authorities assured them that an autopsy would determine the exact cause of death.

Praveen’s family, from Ranga Reddy district near Hyderabad, remains in shock. Seeking help, they reached out to local political leaders and MLAs. He had completed his B.Tech in Hyderabad before moving to the US in 2023 for his master’s. His last visit home was in December 2024, just before returning to the US in January.

His death follows two similar cases involving Telangana students in the US. In November 2024, unknown assailants shot a Khammam student. Another student from Hyderabad met a similar fate in January 2025.

Authorities continue their investigation, while Praveen’s family awaits answers.
