Tata Power inks 5000 MW clean energy deal with Bhutan
Tata Power has signed a landmark deal to develop 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity in Bhutan. The agreement, made with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), marks the largest partnership in Asia’s clean energy sector. DGPC is Bhutan’s sole power generation company, and the MoU was signed in Thimphu by DGPC MD Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha.
The deal includes the development of 4,500 MW of hydropower, including the 1,125 MW Dorjilung project, and a 500 MW solar project by Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL). Tata Power’s commitment aims to enhance clean energy capacity and strengthen its position as a leading developer in the renewable energy sector.
The signing ceremony was attended by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Energy Minister Lyonpo Jame Tshering, and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, alongside senior officials from both governments. The deal emphasizes Bhutan’s potential in hydropower and focuses on meeting the growing energy demands of both countries through a stable, 24-hour clean energy supply.
Praveer Sinha highlighted that this collaboration would harness Bhutan’s hydropower capabilities while fostering a clean energy future. It underscores Tata Power’s dedication to driving the transition to renewable energy in the region. The deal is poised to benefit both nations by enhancing their energy security and contributing to environmental sustainability.
