The Supreme Court deferred the farmer protest hearing to January 10, emphasizing optimism about resolving the ongoing deadlock. On Monday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Punjab government, sought additional time. He informed the court about efforts to persuade farmers to engage with the high-powered committee formed by the court. Sibal expressed hope that the farmers would soon agree to participate.

Transitioning to the hearing, the court stressed the importance of dialogue. The bench, led by Justice Suryakant, reiterated the need for a constructive resolution. “We are hopeful that positive developments will emerge,” the court remarked, underlining its commitment to ending the prolonged impasse.

Previously, on December 28, 2024, the Supreme Court criticized the Punjab government for failing to admit farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal to the hospital despite court orders. The court viewed this non-compliance as contempt. Justice Suryakant warned the Punjab government, stating, “You must realize the gravity of the situation and the court’s next step if orders are not followed.”

The health condition of Dallewal remains a focal point. Farmers have rallied behind their leader, expressing frustration over the government’s inaction. Meanwhile, the court has urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and work toward a peaceful resolution.

The farmer protests, rooted in demands for better policies, have drawn national attention. These protests highlight the struggle between state governance and grassroots movements. The court’s intervention aims to mediate and address concerns through institutional mechanisms.

Looking ahead, the January 10 hearing could prove pivotal. With the Supreme Court urging both the Punjab government and protesting farmers to cooperate, the next steps may determine whether the deadlock ends or intensifies.
