The Supreme Court criticized the Punjab Government on Thursday for its inadequate handling of the ongoing farmers’ agitation. A bench led by Justice Suryakant questioned the state’s inability to address the situation effectively.

During the hearing, the court expressed displeasure with Punjab’s failure to engage with farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. Justice Suryakant noted that the government should explain to Dallewal that his hunger strike could continue even if he seeks medical care. The bench emphasized that the state must act responsibly to prevent the situation from escalating.

The court asked if Punjab had informed farmers about the Supreme Court-appointed committee meant to address their concerns. It criticized certain objectionable statements made by farmer leaders and called for clear communication to convey that such remarks are inappropriate. The bench remarked, “Deliberate efforts are worsening the situation, which is unacceptable.”

Rejecting claims of coercion, the court clarified, “We never instructed that Dallewal must end his hunger strike. The focus should be on constructive dialogue, not force.” Punjab officials present at the protest site were reportedly trying to resolve the issue, but the court found these efforts insufficient.

Granting the Punjab Government more time, the bench postponed the next hearing to January 7. It directed the state to submit an updated status report by then, outlining steps taken to address the agitation and communicate with the farmers effectively.

The Supreme Court’s observations underline the need for transparent dialogue and urgent action to resolve the stalemate.
