Steve Smith reached a major milestone on Day 1 of Australia’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. After failing to achieve the 10,000-run mark during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, Smith surpassed the figure with a signature flick toward mid-on. His 10,000th run also marked his 35th Test century, 17 of which have come away from home.

Smith’s achievement placed him ahead of Virat Kohli, who previously held the record for the most away centuries in Test cricket. Kohli had 16 away tons, but Smith now leads with 17. His 35th century also helped Australia reach a solid 137/2, continuing their strong start after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat.

Smith’s 10,000 runs have come at an average of over 55, with only Kumar Sangakkara (57.40) averaging better among batters with 10,000-plus runs. Smith became the fifth-fastest player to reach 10,000 Test runs in terms of innings. He joins Australian legends Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting as the fourth Australian to achieve this feat.

Ponting, who is part of the conversation as one of the best players of his generation, believes Smith’s numbers strengthen his case as the top player ahead of Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson. Ponting stated, “Is he the best player of his generation? It’s hard to argue against it.” He acknowledged that Joe Root’s recent form has brought him closer to the top but still feels Smith’s record stands out.

Smith’s 10,000-run milestone adds to his legacy as one of the best modern-day players. While debates over the best player of his generation continue, Smith’s consistency and achievement make him a strong contender for the title.
