Sri Lanka elections now on August 5
New Delhi, June 11 (HS): Mahinda Deshapriya, chairman of the National Election Commission of Sri Lanka, has announced the new schedule of parliamentary elections. He said that the National Election Commission had decided unanimously on the date of holding the parliamentary elections on August 5 .
The Election Commission of Sri Lanka told the top court that amid the rising Corona cases, it was not possible to hold elections on June 20.
It will be mandatory to follow the health guidelines during the elections. People will have to wear masks and also follow physical distancing norms.
Mahinda Deshapriya said in his statement that the parliamentary election had been deferred twice due to Corona. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa dissolved Parliament on March 2, six months before the end of his term. Elections were to be held on April 25 but were postponed due to Corona .
