Sports Ministry reinstates Wrestling Federation of India

The Sports Ministry lifted the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday. This decision allows WFI to resume national competitions and select teams for international tournaments.
In an official statement, the ministry explained its decision. “After reviewing the spot verification committee’s report, the corrective steps taken by WFI, and the broader interests of Indian sports and athletes, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lifts the suspension on WFI with immediate effect. WFI is now re-recognized as a National Sports Federation (NSF).”
The ministry had suspended WFI on December 24, 2023. The suspension came after WFI hastily announced the Under-15 and Under-20 national championships. The ministry criticized the rushed decision and raised concerns over the venue selection.
On December 21, 2023, Sanjay Singh’s panel won the WFI elections. Soon after, WFI scheduled the championships in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. The chosen venue, Nandini Nagar, has ties to former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. This move angered the government, leading to the suspension.
With the ban lifted, WFI can now function normally. It will oversee wrestling events, organize training camps, and send teams for global competitions. The decision comes as a relief for wrestlers who rely on WFI for career growth.
Wrestling remains one of India’s most successful sports. Athletes like Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik have brought global recognition. The suspension had caused uncertainty among wrestlers preparing for major events. The ministry’s decision restores stability and boosts morale among athletes.
WFI must now focus on maintaining transparency and improving governance. The ministry expects WFI to follow fair practices and avoid controversies. Wrestlers and coaches have urged the federation to prioritize athlete welfare and provide better support systems.
With WFI back in action, Indian wrestling can regain momentum. The federation’s next step will be organizing national championships and preparing teams for upcoming international tournaments. The lifted suspension signals a fresh start for Indian wrestling and its athletes.
