Separate ‘theater command’ to be set up in Jammu and Kashmir: CDS General Rawat
New Delhi, Feb 17 (HS): Chief Defense Chairman (CDS) General Bipin Rawat said on Monday that India was planning to establish a separate ‘theater command’ in Jammu and Kashmir. General Rawat told that the Air Defense Command would be launched early next year and the ‘Penisular Command’ by the end of 2021.
He further said that the Indian Air Force will come under the command of the Indian Air Defense Command. All long-range missiles and assets related to air defense will come under this.
India is planning to establish a separate ‘theater command’ in Jammu and Kashmir. Eastern and Western Command of the Indian Navy will be merged into ‘Penisular Command’. The Chief Defense Chairman said that ‘India will also have separate training and theoretical command’ Logistics’ command.
Rawat also favored a policy of staggering procurement of big-ticket purchases, including the acquisition of 114 fighter jets. The Navy’s demand for a third aircraft carrier will be considered after assessing the performance of an indigenously-built aircraft carrier. Gen Rawat also said that submarines are a priority over aircraft carriers for the Navy. India is also looking at overseas bases for logistics, he added.
