SC notice to Yogi govt against renaming Allahabad as Prayagraj
New Delhi, Jan 20 (HS): The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the UP government on a PIL challenging the renaming of Allahabad to Prayagraj. This PIL has been issued by the Allahabad Heritage Society. A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justice BR Gavai and Justice Suryakant issued notice to the state.
On January 1 last year, the name of Allahabad was changed to Prayagraj. The Yogi Cabinet of Uttar Pradesh had approved the proposal to change Allahabad’s name to Prayagraj in October 2018.
There were protests in many places in the case, after which CM Yogi said that nothing much could be expected from those people who do not know about their history and tradition. He said that there are many Prayag on the banks of holy rivers originating from the Himalayas but it is the king of Prayagas. Our government has named it Prayag in view of public sentiment.
