Sambhal Mosque violence: Police find bullet shells, outsiders banned
Violence erupted in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday during a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque. The clashes resulted in three deaths and left 24 police and administrative officers injured. A mob attacked the police and survey team with stones and set vehicles on fire. The police responded with baton charges and tear gas to restore order. To prevent further unrest, the Sambhal administration suspended internet access and closed schools for November 25.
Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh confirmed that bullets were fired by miscreants, injuring several security personnel. Among the wounded was the PRO of the superintendent of police, who was shot in the leg, and a police circle officer hit by pellets. A constable suffered a serious head injury, and a deputy collector fractured his leg.
The violence began as the survey team was leaving after completing its task. Groups surrounding the area pelted stones, forcing the police to use non-lethal force to safely escort the team. Social media footage showed the mob attacking from rooftops near the Shahi Jama Masjid. Police Superintendent Krishan Kumar urged the mob to stop, insisting they should not “spoil their future for politicians.” He denied reports of police firing at the crowd, clarifying that only pellet guns were used.
The police detained 21 people and recovered various weapons, including bullet shells of different calibers, from the scene and the homes of detainees. Two women were also detained after firing occurred at their residence. Those involved in the violence will face charges under the National Security Act (NSA).
The violence followed a local court’s order for a survey of the mosque’s premises. The survey, prompted by claims that the mosque was built on the site of a Hindu temple destroyed by Mughal emperor Babur in 1529, had been postponed from Tuesday to Sunday to avoid disrupting prayers. District officials confirmed that two of the deceased died from bullet wounds, while the cause of the third death is pending an autopsy.
