UDHAMPUR, March 6 (HS):Continuing their indefinite protest dharna, the Safai Karamcharis of Municipal Committee Udhampur today threatened to further intensify their struggle if the Government does not concede their demands.

During the protest the whole city has turned into a pile of garbage and garbage are seen lying scattered in Udhampur here and there notwithstanding the Government claims about the launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make India clean and green. The heaps of the filth are dumped along the National Highway and Dhar Road in Udhampur town but the Municipal Council has failed to get the same removed and clean the area.

Locals’ people visiting the market are forced to cover their mouth as foul smell emanates from the garbage dumps.

A shopkeeper in the Goal Market said that the heaps of filth have been dumped in front of their shops for the last six day, but neither the Municipal Council not the District Administration Udhampur takes cognizance of the same. “Several times we have brought up this problem into the notice of higher authorities but all in vain,” he added.

Protesting under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Safai Mazdoor Sangh Udhampur and observing dharna in front of the office of Municipal Committee Udhampur, they are demanding regularization in relaxation to the new recruitment rules for the class IV jobs, including Safai Karamcharis and Drivers.
Girdhari Lal, Urban Local Body working president J&K and Kaka Husan president Municipal Udhampur led the protesters.
“The strike will continue till Government concedes demands of the Safai Karamcharis, who are frontline warriors but facing discrimination and apathy of the administration,”said Girdhari Lal.
