National Conference (NC) leader and Member of Parliament, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, has declared his readiness to join protests in New Delhi demanding statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. In a tweet, he confirmed his support for the cause and emphasized his intention to rally the backing of over 100 parliamentarians.

Ruhullah has consistently voiced his stance on Jammu and Kashmir’s special status since the 2019 abrogation of Article 370. In his early public speeches in Budgam and subsequent interviews, he made it clear that the fight for restoration of Article 370, along with the dignity it symbolized, remains central to his political agenda. “After 2019, my political stance has been crystal clear,” Ruhullah tweeted, reaffirming his commitment to the cause.

The MP expressed his readiness to take part in the protest, noting the urgency and significance of the movement. “I am ready to participate in such a protest,” he wrote. He further urged others to prioritize the issue of statehood and organize the protest, particularly around January, which marks the anniversary of India’s Constitution adoption. This symbolic timing, he argued, is fitting, as the Constitution once enshrined Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Ruhullah also criticized the abrogation of Article 370, calling it a deliberate act of humiliation. He described the subsequent downgrade of Jammu and Kashmir to a Union Territory as an effort to degrade the region’s dignity. He argued that this move was not just political but a profound statement of disregard for the sacrifices and identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “The abrogation was a political statement, a declaration that our sacrifices mean nothing,” he said, stressing that such actions undermined the region’s autonomy.

Despite the government’s stance, Ruhullah emphasized his unwavering commitment to the cause of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. He urged that the voices of the people should rise, not just for statehood, but for the honor and identity they were denied. “Shouldn’t our voices first rise for our honor, our identity?” he asked.

Ruhullah concluded with a firm message: “The Tree Remembers.” His resolve to continue the fight for Kashmir’s dignity and autonomy remains strong, and he promises to raise his voice louder with each passing day.
