Ruckus over increasing hostel fees at JNU, big protest by students during convocation

New Delhi, Nov 11 (HS): The third convocation was held today  on 11 November at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. In protest against this, the JNU Students Union took out a protest march today. This protest is being held on the issue of the March hostel fee hike and dress code. Students are protesting against the Vice-Chancellor outside the JNU campus.

A large number of CRPF and Delhi Police personnel are deployed to stop the students’ demonstrations. Some of the students who are protesting have been seated on the bus by the soldiers. Later, the water cannon was used to expel the students as the performance increased.

Students of JNU said that when the demand for reduction in their fees is not being accepted, then they do not accept the convocation. The matter of an increase in hostel fees have advanced a lot in the university and no solution is being found.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was present at the convocation. This ceremony is going on right now. Students are demonstrating outside.

On Monday, during the convocation ceremony led by JNU Students Union, students are performing fiercely. The students’ union demands that the decision to increase fees be withdrawn. The student union has appealed to the students and asked them to gather in large numbers and join the march. The student union says that when students are not getting cheap education, then what is the need for convocation.

Students demand that no service charge should be taken in hostels, nor should any dress code be implemented in hostels. Apart from this, there is a demand of the students that the restriction of travel time to hostels should be ended.

Actually, the university had implemented a new rule to close the gates of the JNU campus from 23 October. This information was given to the students through a notice received by the Dean of the Department of International Studies. In this notice, a new rule has been implemented regarding room number 16, common rooms and the main gate of SIS 1 and SIS 2.

The All India Students Association (AISA) protested against the new rule on the administration to close the campus gates after 6 pm. The AISA said that closing the campus gates at six in the evening is to limit freedom of movement.
