After a tough 2024 season, the Mumbai Indians (MI) finished last in the IPL table. Despite this setback, the franchise successfully retained its star players: Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma. This strategic decision resulted from months of discussions and reflects MI’s commitment to keeping its core intact amid rising interest from other teams.

Retaining these players required balancing hierarchy with long-term goals. Bumrah emerged as MI’s highest-paid retention at ₹18 crore. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav followed closely, both earning ₹16.35 crore, while Rohit Sharma received ₹16.30 crore. Additionally, emerging talent Tilak Varma was retained for ₹8 crore, solidifying the team’s foundation.

However, the retention process faced challenges, particularly regarding leadership roles. At one point, the franchise considered changing captains after the disappointing season. Although Hardik’s potential ascension faced mixed reactions from fans, MI management opted for transparency. They engaged in open discussions with players, addressing their concerns honestly.

“There were threadbare discussions where nothing was left unsaid,” a source told the Indian Express, highlighting the depth of these conversations. Ultimately, Rohit Sharma’s willingness to step back and support his teammates played a crucial role in the retention strategy. After retiring from T20Is, following India’s T20 World Cup victory, he simplified the hierarchy within the team.

Rohit emphasized the importance of placing Bumrah, Hardik, and Suryakumar among the top three, recognizing their contributions to the national team. “It has a lot to do with the respect Bumrah has in the team and his importance to the side,” a source noted.

Interestingly, Suryakumar Yadav was the last of the core group to finalize his contract. Despite multiple franchises pursuing him with lucrative offers, he chose to remain with MI. He expressed his commitment to maintaining a positive team atmosphere, stating he would work to keep the dressing room spirit high.

For MI, the ‘Big Four’ symbolize continuity and a renewed determination to reclaim their former glory as they move forward in their cricketing journey.
