The Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand on Sunday could shape the future of Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma’s leadership hangs in the balance, with the BCCI considering a captaincy change.

BCCI’s Plans and Rohit’s Future

The BCCI wants a stable captain for the next two years. Officials delayed announcing new central contracts until after the final. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have discussed the future with the BCCI and Rohit since returning from Australia.

A BCCI source told the Times of India that Rohit believes he still has cricket left in him. The board asked him to share his plans. Retiring remains his decision, but another discussion on captaincy will follow. The source added that while Virat Kohli’s future has been discussed, there is no urgency regarding him.

Performance-Based Contracts and Selection Concerns

The BCCI evaluates Grade A+ contracts based on performances across formats. Rohit, Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20Is and struggled in Test matches, raising concerns. However, a strong Champions Trophy campaign could strengthen their positions.

The board will wait for Rohit’s decision. If he retires, they will plan the next steps. The source noted that Rohit led India to a T20 World Cup win in July and has performed well in the Champions Trophy.

Past Captaincy Transitions

MS Dhoni stepped down from white-ball captaincy two years before the 2019 World Cup, giving Kohli time to settle. Kohli did the same in 2021, allowing Rohit to take over before the 2023 ODI World Cup.

With the 2027 World Cup two years away, ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill is still developing as a leader. If Rohit steps aside, India will need a clear succession plan.
