As the 2025 Champions Trophy nears, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces mounting pressure over stadium renovations. With less than a month left before the tournament, concerns grow about the PCB’s ability to meet the deadline. A report from Dawn calls it “absolutely impossible” for the board to complete the work in time. Despite this, the personnel in charge remain optimistic.

The PCB has heavily invested in upgrading three stadiums: Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. These venues will host key matches in the Champions Trophy. However, with the renovation deadline of January 31 approaching, the PCB struggles to deliver the promised world-class facilities.

The upcoming tri-series between New Zealand and South Africa, which starts February 8, will also test these venues. Lahore and Karachi will host the first few matches, including the final.

A source familiar with the renovations said, “The stadiums will be ready for matches, but the real question is whether the PCB can deliver the world-class experience they promised.” Bilal Chohan, one of the renovation project leaders, has expressed frustration over delays in receiving equipment and clearances.

He mentioned that certain panels for the new Karachi building were delayed. These panels were only released from Karachi Port late Sunday night and were to be installed the following day.

The PCB has spent around PKR 12 billion on the renovations, ensuring the facilities are up to standard. However, with tickets already on sale, doubts remain until the PCB confirms possession of the new venues. The pressure is mounting as the clock ticks down to the tournament.

The situation is further complicated by the resignation of ICC CEO Geoff Allardice. Sources suggest that his inability to provide clarity on Pakistan’s readiness for the Champions Trophy may have contributed to his departure. As the January 31 deadline looms, the PCB must act swiftly to alleviate concerns and ensure the event runs smoothly.
