Lucknow, 28 April  (HS) :      Amid the rising demand for sanitiser to protect against the coronavirus, the Uttar Pradesh government has created a new record in the production of sanitiser, on the directions of CM Yogi Adityanath.

Around 97 sugar mills and other small units have produced more than 2 crore litres of alcohol based sanitizers by March 25, which is a record. The sanitisers produced by the UP sugar mills and distilleries is not only fulfilling the demands in state, but is also widely supplied to other states of the country.

Recognizing the surging demand , the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh directed the Excise and Sugarcane  Department to ramp up the process of sanitiser production with the use of ethanol, ethyl alcohol.

As the devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps across India, the Sugar Mills in Uttar Pradesh have increased their capacity of sanitizer production. Around 6 lakh litres of sanitiser is being produced daily in the sugar mills and small units of UP, while the capacity of sanitiser production is 6.5 lakh litres.

According to Additional Chief Secretary, Excise and Sugarcane Deptt, Sanjay Bhoosreddy, “the sanitiser prepared by the government and private institutions  is also available in the market for the general public”.

Breaking the chain of infection

The Additional Chief Secretary said that the sanitizers prepared by the distilleries and other units is being used in the Sanitization work by the Municipal Corporation, Department of Health and other institutions. Particularly on behalf of Municipal Corporation, a sanitation campaign is being carried out at war foot level in the state where the sanitiser is being extensively used.

The work of sanitizing the roads and streets of the city including the main institutions, markets, hospitals in the state is underway in 17 Nagar Nigams and 48 major Nagar Mahapalikas of the state.

177 lakh litre sanitizer was produced last year

He said, last year, during the first wave, the units produced record quantities of 177 lakh litres of sanitiser from March 24 to November 15,2020 by state sugar mills and small units. This generated a revenue of about Rs 137 crore for the government. Out of this, 78.38 lakh litres of sanitiser was sold outside UP. At the same time, a total of 87.01 lakh litres of sanitiser was sold in UP, he added.
