Ratan Tata’s will has shocked many, revealing an unexpected beneficiary. He left over ₹500 crore to Mohini Mohan Dutta, a travel entrepreneur from Jamshedpur. The Tata family and close associates were unaware of this connection.

Dutta had a long association with Tata. His family owned Stallion, a travel agency that merged with Taj Services in 2013. Before the merger, his family controlled 80% of Stallion, while Tata Industries held the rest. Dutta also served as a director at TC Travel Services, once affiliated with Thomas Cook.

Tata insiders recall Dutta calling himself close to the Tata family. At Tata’s funeral in October 2024, he shared how their bond began in Jamshedpur when Tata was 24. “He helped me out and built me up,” Dutta said, describing their six-decade-long relationship.

In December 2024, Tata’s close circle gathered at NCPA in Mumbai to celebrate his birth anniversary. Dutta attended alongside family members and longtime associates.

Ratan Tata’s will reflects his dedication to philanthropy. He allocated most of his wealth to charitable causes through two entities: the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust. His half-sisters, named as beneficiaries, may also donate their shares to charity.

Tata, one of India’s most celebrated business leaders, passed away in October 2024 at 86. Under his leadership, the Tata Group grew into one of India’s largest companies, generating over $100 billion in annual revenue.
