Delhi and the National Capital Region woke up to rain on Friday, setting the tone for a colder and unsettled day. Early morning showers and light drizzles covered several parts of the city and adjoining areas. As a result, winter conditions tightened their grip across the region.

To begin with, parts of central and south Delhi received brief spells of rain. At the same time, Noida and other NCR pockets also reported light rainfall. These showers brought slight relief from pollution. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi’s air quality index stood at 297 at 7.05 am. That marked a marginal improvement from the previous day, though the air remained in the “poor” category.

Meanwhile, temperatures showed a clear downward trend. On January 23, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 19 degrees Celsius. However, the India Meteorological Department forecast a sharper dip over the next 24 hours. On January 24, the minimum temperature may drop to 7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum may hover around 17 degrees Celsius. Consequently, residents can expect colder conditions through the day and night.

In response to the changing weather, the IMD issued an orange alert for Delhi. The department warned of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The nowcast alert remains valid till 10 am. In addition, strong winds may sweep across the city. Wind speeds could range between 40 and 60 kmph during this period, the IMD said.

Furthermore, the weather department flagged unstable conditions for the rest of the day. In its detailed forecast, the IMD predicted a generally cloudy sky. It also forecast one or two spells of light rain during the early and forenoon hours. These spells may come with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Wind speeds during these hours may touch 30 to 40 kmph.

Later in the day, another round of weather activity may follow. The IMD expects very light to light rain during the afternoon and evening hours. Alongside rain, the department warned of shallow fog in the morning. As a result, it advised commuters to remain alert, especially during early travel hours.

At the same time, the IMD placed a yellow alert for the entire day. This alert covers thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across different time slots. According to the forecast, such conditions may persist during the morning, forenoon, afternoon, evening, and even night. Wind speeds during these phases may consistently remain between 30 and 40 kmph.

Importantly, the IMD urged residents to exercise caution. Strong winds and thunderstorms may disrupt normal activities. Authorities also advised people to secure loose objects and avoid sheltering under trees during lightning.

To clarify, the IMD explained the difference between alert levels. A yellow alert does not signal immediate danger. Instead, it advises people and authorities to stay updated and prepared. In contrast, an orange alert indicates more severe weather. It asks authorities to remain ready for emergency measures. It also urges the public to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse conditions.

Overall, Delhi-NCR faces a cold, windy, and rainy spell. With falling temperatures and unstable weather, residents should stay cautious and plan their day accordingly.
