Rahul Gandhi briefs Lok Sabha MPs on Waqf Bill strategy
Rahul Gandhi met Congress MPs on Wednesday to discuss the party’s stance on the Waqf Amendment Bill. The meeting focused on strategy for opposing the bill in Parliament. Leaders like Gaurav Gogoi, KC Venugopal, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, and K Suresh attended.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram urged the government to respect religious sensitivities and not push the bill solely to please its core vote bank.
Earlier, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi protested at Makar Dwar, wearing a black kurta and holding a placard reading “Reject Waqf Bill.” Congress MP K Suresh confirmed the INDIA bloc’s united opposition to the bill, stating that their members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee also rejected it.
Congress’ Khaleequr Rahman accused the government of acting unconstitutionally. Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav called the amendments dictatorial, insisting on discussions to expose the bill’s implications. Despite resistance, the government is expected to pass the bill due to its majority.
