Quake of minor amplitude hits northwest Japan
Tokyo, June 19 (HS): Earthquake tremors were felt in Japan on Tuesday night.The intensity of earthquake at Richter scale was recorded 6.7. After the earthquake ,officials warned of a possible tsunami up to 3.3 feet high along parts of the coast.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency said, the centre of earthquake was located off the western coast of Yamagata about 30 miles southwest of the city of Sakata.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, his government is on alert for doing relief work in the region. Simultaneously, citizens have been advised to be alert.
According to the local administration, 16 persons were injured after the earthquake. The officer of Relief Management Work Yusuke Nijeki said that 12 people had been injured in Yamagata and they were engaged in collecting more information.
According to the Nuclear Regulation Authority, bullet-train service was suspended in the region because of power outages and for safety checks. All seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata were offline and no abnormalities were reported.
