Pune court summons Rahul Gandhi over Savarkar defamation

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi must appear in a Pune court on December 2. The summons follows a defamation complaint filed by Satyaki Savarkar, grandson of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

Satyaki alleges that Gandhi misquoted Savarkar during a speech in London in March 2023. According to the complaint, Gandhi falsely attributed statements to Savarkar that he never wrote in his book.

The court issued the summons based on this claim, instructing Gandhi to appear in person. This legal move has drawn attention, sparking discussions about the responsibility of public figures to ensure accuracy in their statements.

The controversy stems from Gandhi’s remarks during his UK visit, where he criticized several historical figures, including Savarkar. The complainant asserts that Gandhi’s comments tarnished Savarkar’s legacy, prompting legal action to defend the freedom fighter’s reputation.

The case underscores the ongoing political tension surrounding Savarkar’s historical role and legacy. While some see him as a symbol of nationalism, others view his actions during India’s freedom struggle more critically.

Gandhi has yet to respond publicly to the summons. Meanwhile, the issue has reignited debates about freedom of speech and the legal limits of criticism in India.
