Meanwhile, the sources says that amid growing opposition against the amended citizenship law, the Union Cabinet is scheduled to meet Tuesday. Although several attempts made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allay fears on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and a proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC), protests against the Act continued to increase.
In West Bengal also, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is to hold her fifth protest march against the legislation today. She is scheduled to lead the march from Swami Vivekanada statue at Bidhan Sarani in north Kolkata to Gandhi Bhawan in Beleghata.
Amid the nationwide protests against the CAA, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will lead a pro-CAA rally in West Bengal’s Siliguri in order to allay fears from the different community and to educate them about the law.
“This law will not effect the citizenship of any Indian citizen rather it has been amended to extend citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh who sought refuge in India before 2015,” said Fadnavis.
