Priyanka Vadra slams UP govt on farmer’s suicide
New Delhi, June 5 (HS): Congress general secretary Priyanka Vadra on Friday hit out at Utter Pradesh government for neglecting farmers. She rubbished the state government claims on payment to farmers within 14 days, and said nothing had happened so far.
Referring to a farmer suicide case, Priyanka Vadra said that the hapless farmer did so on seeing his sugarcane crop drying up in the fields as he could not sell it in absence of necessary papers. The UP government claims that it was disbursing payment to the farmers within 14 days was all false, she said. She further said that the sugar mills had been closed with payments worth crores of rupees due to the farmers.
It may be noted that Omal (50), a farmer in Sisouli town of Buna Barkarakla area of Muzaffarnagar, recently committed suicide due to financial crisis.
The Congress leader has been vocal over the issues of Uttar Pradesh in the last one and half years.
In a series of tweets, Priyanka Vadra, who is also party in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh, said, “Seeing his sugarcane crop drying in the field and not getting the slip, a sugarcane farmer of Muzaffarnagar committed suicide. The BJP claimed that full payment would be given in 14 days, but the sugar mills have been closed with payment due worth thousands of crores.”
“I had apprised the government two days ago. One can imagine how these sugarcane farmers must be feeling during this financial crisis without getting their dues. But now the UP government does not even mention about giving of sugarcane payment in 14 days,” tweeted Priyanka. She also attached a news report of the suicide by the Muzaffarnagar sugarcane farmer with her tweet.
