Prez Murmu Lifts Rule in J&K, Paving Way for NC-Congress Alliance Govt
President Droupadi Murmu has revoked President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir, clearing the path for a National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance government. This follows the recent Assembly elections where the alliance won 48 seats. The Union Home Ministry issued the official order under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
The gazette, signed by the President, specifies that President’s rule will end before the new Chief Minister’s appointment under Section 54. This announcement came after NC Vice-President Omar Abdullah met with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to stake his claim for forming a government. Abdullah is set to become the Chief Minister, marking a return to democratic governance.
President’s rule had been in place since October 31, 2019, after Jammu and Kashmir’s bifurcation into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The revocation of Article 370, which ended the region’s special status, was a major event leading up to the current developments.
This decision ushers in a new era of leadership, as Jammu and Kashmir moves towards development and stability under its democratically elected government.
