Prashant Kishor detained while backing BPSC protesters with hunger strike
Bihar Police detained Jan Suraaj chief Prashant Kishor early Monday at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Kishor had been on an indefinite hunger strike since Thursday. He demanded the cancellation of the 70th Combined Preliminary Examination conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) on December 13.
Background on the Protest
The controversy began with allegations of irregularities in the BPSC exam. Students claimed question paper leaks and unfair practices. The government announced a re-examination for affected candidates, which escalated tensions. Kishor criticized this move, stating it indirectly acknowledged errors. He told ANI, “By holding a re-exam, the government has admitted the irregularities.”
Kishor’s Call for Immediate Action
Kishor urged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to address the students’ concerns. “Meeting the students serves the state’s interest,” he stressed. He also highlighted the urgency of resolving the issue for the welfare of students.
Appeal to National Leaders
Kishor called on Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav to support the cause. He stated, “These leaders can mobilize five lakh people at Gandhi Maidan. The youth’s future is at stake.” He condemned the government’s use of force, mentioning 87 lathi charge incidents in the last three years.
Legal Action Against Protesters
The district administration filed an FIR against Kishor and 150 supporters, labeling the protest as illegal. Despite this, students continue their agitation, demanding fairness in the recruitment process.
Examination Controversy
The BPSC denied allegations of a question paper leak but ordered a fresh exam for 12,000 candidates. Only 5,943 candidates appeared for the re-test held at the Bapu Pariksha Parisar center in Patna on Saturday. The low turnout reflected growing distrust among students.
Rising Tensions
The protest gained momentum with Kishor’s hunger strike. Students and activists demanded accountability and transparency from the government. The issue underscores a broader dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of public examinations.
Ongoing Struggle
Kishor’s detention highlighted the state’s challenges in managing the unrest. The protesting students demand justice and reforms. As the crisis deepens, the government faces increasing pressure to resolve the situation and rebuild trust in its systems.
